Mistakes have
been made in the past in the application of the death penalty, and
innocent persons have been executed for crimes they did not commit.
For a variety of reasons, hundreds
of innocent individuals have been mistakenly put to death. Since
DNA evidence began to be used, hundreds of death-row inmates have
been proven not guilty. Without DNA findings to clearly identify
whether a suspect is the real criminal or not, many innocent individuals
would have already been killed. Research showed that individuals
have been wrongfully convicted of murder and executed. It is too
late to correct those mistakes now, but at least, it is time to
admit the fact that it is awfully unjust to impose a sentence that
cannot be reversed when mistakes are made. The only way to avoid
taking innocent lives is to abolish the death penalty.
